Laurel is a semi-small city in Yellowstone County, Montana. It has only two neighborhoods and is the thirteenth largest city in the state. It is the third largest community in the Billings Metropolitan Area. The city is located in the midst of the Yellowstone Valley and serves as an east-west dividing point of the Burlington-Northern Railroad. The history of the community begins with settlers who began arriving in the area in 1879. During the early history of the community, a section house was built approximately on what now called Hobo Hill. This section house served as a depot and post office to the growing community. The railroad came through in about 1882 and the population of the community began to boom. The population grew from around 200 in 1882 up to 2,338 by about 1920. In the beginning, the community that would one day be Laurel, was called Carlton. However, in 1883 the community was renamed Laurel.
The Laurel Public School District has three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school, though it is a fairly small district it has wonderful schools. Laurel is a unique city with a rich history and varied things that make it special. For instance,the city is home to the Cenex Harvest State oil refinery, and the Laurel Municipal Airport. It is also home to the largest railyard between St. Paul and Pasco. Riverfront Park, in Laurel, is located along the Nez Perce National Historic trail.
