Absarokee is located in the mist of the Rosebud River watershed, and is known to have long bitterly cold winters with snow and wind. The CDP is somewhat racially and ethnically diverse, though most residents to identify as Caucasian and some identify as Native American. Common ancestries include Norwegian, German, English, Irish, Czech and Native American. English is the primary spoken language in the community, followed by Polish, German and Yiddish.

Much of the history of the area’s native Crow tribes is a sad tale of governmental control which stripped them of their autonomy. The CDP takes its name from the name given by the Crow tribes, Apaaslookei, which means “Children of the large-beaked bird”. The Homestead acts of the 1860s brought westward expansion, railroads and settlers to the area. The land in the Absarokee area was opened for settlement, by European and American settlers in 1892 and Absarokee was founded that same year. Sever T. Simonson is recognized as the founder of the community. Simonson was one of the first settlers in the area, he and his family began squatting on their chosen piece of land four days before it was officially open for settlement. Soon Simonson and his family opened a hotel and established a much-needed trading post. Soon others began building and the town quickly gained a saloon, blacksmith shop, livery stable and more.
Public education in the community is primarily provided by Absarokee Elementary and Absarokee High School. It is a small community but warm and loving.
