The CDP takes its name from the name given by the Crow tribes, Apaaslookei, which means “Children of the large-beaked bird”. The Homestead acts of the 1860s brought westward expansion, railroads and settlers to the area. The land in the Absarokee area was opened for settlement, by European and American settlers in 1892 and Absarokee was founded that same year. Sever T. Simonson is recognized as the founder of the community. Simonson was one of the first settlers in the area, he and his family began squatting on their chosen piece of land four days before it was officially open for settlement. Soon Simonson and his family opened a hotel and established a much-needed trading post. Soon others began building and the town quickly gained a saloon, blacksmith shop, livery stable and more.
