Gold and coal were both found in the area in its early history and this began to draw settlers from the east and across the globe. A treaty in 1880 allowed settlers to begin to move into the area. Most of these settlers came from Europe though not all, they came from Italy, Scotland, Wales, England, Ireland, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Germany and more. The Red Lodge post office was established in 1884 and the town grew quickly. In these early days there were many saloons and Red Lodge was a raucous and dangerous community. However, these days did not last long, the mines closed and the Great Depression hit the area hard. The local economy came to depend on the production and sales of bootleg liquor. The reawakening of the area began in 1931, as construction began on Beartooth Highway that would connect Red Lodge to Yellowstone National Park. Since then, the community has flourished developing into a great tourist destination and comfortable community.
