Shepherd, Montana is a tiny community, technically a CDP in Yellowstone County. The CDP had a single
neighborhood and is among the smallest communities in the state. Shepherd is sometimes considered a
suburb or bedroom community to the nearby big city of Billings, Montana. The community is somewhat
ethnically and racially diverse, but the most common ancestries are European. Among these common
ancestries is German, English, Norwegian, Irish and Scottish. English is the primary spoken language in
Shepherd, followed by Italian, German and Yiddish. It is a well-educated community where over 29% of
adults over 25 have four-year degrees or more. This is well above the national education average for
U.S. communities. Shepherd is minutes from the bustling city of Billings but there is no public
transportation in or around Shepherd. Daily commuters from Shepherd rely on private vehicles for their

The community spans about 1.1 square miles o f land area. It is primarily a blue-collar community and is

The community is named after a prominent early settler in the area, R.E. Shepherd. Shepherd owned the
Billings Land and Irrigation Company and the Merchants National Bank. Shepherd helped bring settlers
to the area and plan early stages of the community. Today in Shepherd, public education for the youth
of the community is provided by the schools of the Shepherd Public School System. Students attend
classes at Shepherd Elementary, Shepherd Middle School and Shepherd High School. Local attractions
include the nearby is the Ah Nei Recreation area, which features activities such as hiking, wildlife
observation, mountain, biking, horseback riding, picnicking, birdwatching and more. Other local
favorites include the Eagle Rock Golf Course, Pompey Pillar National Monument, Country Bowling
